With the great success of the Carmelle Family Planning Center and working closely with Dr. Romel and his prenatal clinic, Luke’s MIssion is happy to announce the opening of the CArmelle Voltaire Birth Center on November 26, 2018. We will have 8 beds for use as labor, delivery and post partum needs of our moms.
We plan to operate under the World Helath Organizations regulations for Small Health Care FAcilities. I am developing a SOP handbook for the staff to make sure we provide safe and effective care for our moms and babies. We are installing upgrades to include solar panels/invertor for electricity, more cisterns to make sure we have adequate water and a fresh coat of paint. Deep cleaining will occur just before we open. We have hired 4 professional midwives who hava alot of experience deliverying babies in a lot of circumstances in Haiti. Armelle is the head midwife. She has worked setting up birth centers for hte Red Cross and recently worked at the Doctors without Borders Birth Center, which was closed recently. We are in need of donations to cover the cost of sheets for our beds ($7) and diapers we want to give our new moms (most Haitian women don’t have diapers for their babies-$10). Use our donation page to give via paypal or with your credit card.
The Carmelle Center continues to function successfully now nearly a year after opening. Open daily and staffed by Fregga Charles Dorsaint, RN, the services provided include pre-pregnancy educ
ation, pregnancy testing, general medical screening, contraceptive education and methods, dispensing of free contraceptives, prenatal education for women who are pregnant and follow up for all of the women who receive services.
Fregga teaches prenatal classes three days a week for women who are seen at the Clinique Sant Esprit and enrolled in their prenatal program. All women followed by Dr. Dorsaint receive a standards 4-6 classes of prenatal education prior to 24 weeks gestation. Following that they are followed by Freega and Dr. Romel until birth.
The clinic services have increased steadily each month since opening and we are tracking the numbers of unplanned pregnancies seen in the Clinic Sant Espirit. Final data will be available at the end of the first year (September 2017) Early data is very promising related to the effectiveness in decreasing unplanned pregnancies in the Croix Des Bouquet catchment area which both clinics serve.
Month operating costs are $800. The bulk of this is for salaries for the staff. Please consider donating via the link on our site for Paypal.
